NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony is hoping for an assist from Maroon PR to help grow his charitable foundation.
Marriottsville-based Maroon PR said Wednesday it will oversee public relations outreach for the Carmelo Anthony Foundation, established in 2005 by the Baltimore-born professional basketball player. Anthony, who starred at Syracuse University and now plays for the Denver Nuggets, hosts annual fundraisers in both of those cities as well as his hometown. He has won recognition from philanthropic groups for efforts that include giving millions of dollars to opening a youth center in Baltimore.
“The public is obviously aware of Carmelo’s All-Star status on the basketball court, and we look forward to bringing awareness to his efforts as a superstar off the court through his foundation and philanthropy,” said John Maroon, president of Maroon PR, in a statement.
Maroon is the longtime spokesman for baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr.
Theresa Tran at Tease Marketing will handle public relations for Anthony in areas outside the foundation and his philanthropic efforts.
Anthony’s garnered negative publicity in recent years for some off-the-court incidents. He was arrested April 14 in Denver and charged with driving under the influence. He has a June 5 court date for that charge, according to the Associated Press.
The 23-year-old also came under heavy criticism for his appearance in the now-infamous “Stop Snitchin’” DVD, an underground video featuring alleged drug dealers.
